Electional Astrology Engine

The ancients didn't just read the stars — they used them to plan. Electional astrology is the art of choosing the optimal moment to begin an endeavor. Chaldea automates the entire process.

What Is Electional Astrology?

Every moment has a chart. When you start a business, sign a contract, or schedule a surgery, that moment's chart becomes the "birth chart" of that endeavor. Electional astrology is the practice of choosing a moment whose chart supports your intention.

Traditionally, this requires an astrologer to manually scan the ephemeris, check dozens of conditions, and balance competing factors. Chaldea's electional engine does this computationally — scanning days or weeks of upcoming time and grading every potential window.

Six Purpose-Specific Rulesets

Different endeavors have different astrological requirements. You wouldn't use the same election rules for a wedding and a surgery. Chaldea includes six distinct rulesets, each tuned to its domain:

1. Business & Launches

Prioritizes a strong 10th house (career, public visibility), benefic aspects to the Midheaven, a well-placed ruler of the Ascendant, and angular Jupiter or Venus. Avoids malefics on angles and retrograde Mercury.

2. Contracts & Agreements

Emphasizes the 7th house (partnerships), mutual reception between 1st and 7th rulers, and strong Mercury (communication, documentation). Flags void-of-course Moon — the classic "nothing will come of it" indicator.

3. Travel

Focuses on the 9th house (long journeys) or 3rd house (short trips), a well-aspected Moon, and avoidance of Mars afflictions to the Ascendant. Checks for Moon applying to malefics, which traditionally signals danger on the road.

4. Medical & Health

Avoids Moon in the sign ruling the body part being treated. Prioritizes a strong, well-aspected Moon, benefics in the 6th house, and avoidance of Mars (cutting, inflammation) in harsh aspect to the Ascendant. Traditional medical election rules, properly applied.

5. Relationships & Marriage

Emphasizes Venus, the 7th house, and the Moon's condition. Seeks benefic aspects between the 1st and 7th house rulers, a well-dignified Venus, and an applying Moon-Venus or Moon-Jupiter aspect. Avoids Saturn aspects to Venus.

6. General Purpose

A balanced ruleset for anything that doesn't fit the above categories. Prioritizes a strong Ascendant ruler, benefics on angles, a well-placed Moon applying to benefics, and avoidance of the standard pitfalls.

The Window Scanner

Tell Chaldea what you're planning and when you need to do it, and the engine scans the timeframe — hour by hour — evaluating each potential window against the relevant ruleset. Results are graded:

  • Excellent — Multiple positive factors align. Strong recommendation.
  • Good — Solid election with no major problems.
  • Acceptable — Not ideal, but no deal-breakers.
  • Poor — Significant challenges. Consider waiting.
  • Avoid — Major afflictions present. Do not elect this time.

Avoidance Rules

Some conditions are universally negative for elections, regardless of purpose. Chaldea automatically screens for:

  • Void-of-Course Moon — The Moon makes no applying aspects before leaving its sign. "Nothing will come of the matter."
  • Retrograde planets on angles — Especially Mercury retrograde for business and communication matters.
  • Moon applying to malefics — Moon's next aspect to Mars or Saturn without benefic intervention.
  • Malefics on the Ascendant — Mars or Saturn rising at the elected moment.
  • Combust planets — Key significators too close to the Sun, rendered invisible and weakened.

Inception Charts

Beyond elections, Chaldea also supports inception chart analysis — reading the chart of a moment that already happened. When did your business incorporate? When did you sign that lease? Upload the date, and Chaldea analyzes the inception chart to reveal what the moment's astrology suggests about the endeavor's trajectory.

Astrology as a Planning Tool

Electional astrology is the most practical branch of the art. It doesn't require belief in fate — just the observation that when you start something matters. Chaldea makes this ancient planning technology accessible to anyone, without requiring years of astrological training.
